With more and more providers completing attestation and qualifying for meaningful use incentive payments, CMS officials are saying these early successes bode well for the future of the EHR initiative.

Robert Tagalicod, director of CMS's Office of e-Health Standards and Services, told Health Leaders Media that as of August, 2,243 physicians had successfully completed the meaningful use attestation. Meanwhile, only 30 providers who began the process were unsuccessful.

This high success rate indicates that many physicians are engaged in the EHR incentive program, understand its requirements and are actively working to meet these goals, said Tagalicod.

"What is encouraging to us at this point is the number of providers who are already successfully attesting and the number we’ve heard anecdotally are planning to attest in the coming months," he told the news source. "We're excited about these early successes in the EHR Incentive Programs."

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that 34 percent of office-based physicians are currently using an EHR system. This may help many of these providers qualify for the incentive program.
