SRS Applauds AMA and Physician Groups for Warning against Purchase of Failure-Prone EHRs
State and Specialty Societies Aim to Protect Physicians from 50-80% Failure Rate of Legacy EHRs
MONTVALE, NJ - March 19, 2010 - SRS, the leader in high-performance hybrid EMRs, today announced its support for the recommendation sent to CMS by the American Medical Association (AMA) and 95 other physician societies and organizations. In the introduction to their detailed comments on the proposed meaningful use rule, these organizations issued this warning:
"We believe that the larger concern should be deterring the purchasing of costly EHR products that fail to improve physician workflow, patient care, and practice needs. Industry experts have cited that such failures have adversely affected EHR adoption rates ranging from 50-80 percent."
"This has been our position all along," says Evan Steele, CEO of SRSsoft. According to Steele, physician organizations are finally recognizing that demonstrating meaningful use is just the tip of the iceberg. Given the poor track record and underlying problems associated with overly complex EHR products—including a significant decrease in physician productivity, particularly for specialists—the escalating meaningful use requirements can only compound an existing problem, claims Steele.
"SRS has consistently focused its development efforts on improving physician productivity and on providing them the tools to deliver the highest quality patient care," Steele says. "We represent the voice of the physician, and we are thrilled that the AMA and the other 95 physicians' organizations—which represent a majority of practicing physicians in the United States—see our point of view as mainstream rather than contrarian."
According to SRS, increased EHR adoption and success will come about only when physicians are encouraged to purchase those EHR products that improve their workflow and efficiency, and that have proven success in the marketplace.
