EHR implementation can bring many benefits to a practice, but simply getting the process of adoption started can be a challenge. In order to help more practices take this crucial first step, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT recently released a new tool to guide medical professionals through the process.

The tool breaks down EHR implementation into five simple steps, which are assessing readiness, planning an approach, selecting a certified EHR system, training employees and using the system to comply with the meaningful use rules. More detail is provided on how to accomplish each of these steps at the site.

Furthermore, the online resource offers practices advice on how they can obtain technical support through a Regional Extension Center. These offices can provide assistance for each of the steps outlined above. The ONC describes the advice offered by these facilities as "impartial," meaning a practice will not be steered toward a system that may not meet all of its needs.

Given the resources available to make EHR implementation simpler and the financial incentives offered for successful adoption, practices may find many reasons to transition to the technology.
