Oregon physicians flock to EHRs
Massachusetts and parts of California are often thought of as the seats of healthcare innovation, but a new report suggests that Oregon may be giving these traditional players a run for their money.
The state's Regional Extension Center, the Oregon Health Information Technology Center (O-HITEC), recently announced that it now ranks in the top 10 states that are getting physicians to sign up for EHR implementation consulting services.
Regional Extension Centers were set up thanks to funding from the stimulus package. These facilities provide smaller practices with guidance on selecting and implementing an EHR vendor.
By the end of 2011, O-HITEC had signed up more than 2,700 physicians to receive consulting services. Officials said the number signifies that there is a large number of physicians in the state who are interested in using EHRs to start delivering better care.
"The exciting work of health reform is just beginning, and we are here to help providers to take full advantage of this extraordinary technology and the training to make it useful," said Clayton Gillett, the center's executive director.
