August was a big month for the adoption of EHR systems, as government officials report high numbers of physicians signed up to participate in the meaningful use incentive program.

Robert Anthony, a specialist at the Office of e-Health Standards and Services of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Government Health IT that a total of 90,000 providers signed up to participate in the EHR incentive program in August.

This represented a 30 percent increase over the 77,000 physicians that joined the program in July. Anthony said this represents a trend of growing interest in the benefits of EHR implementation.

"When we launched in April, we had a trickle, and that trickle is turning into a faucet opening up a little more. If this trend holds, we'll have the faucet fully going," he told the news source.

Reports have indicated that providers are mostly interested in the financial incentives of participating in the program. Those in the Medicare arm of the initiative are eligible for up to $44,000 in payments, while those on the Medicaid side may gain up to $63,750.
