Practices should be mindful of workflow during EHR implementation
Regardless of whether or not they have implemented an EHR system, most practices likely do have a fully optimized workflow. Bulky administrative processes can slow down the delivery of care. But one expert says that transitioning to a new technology may help practices change this.
Rosemarie Nelson of the MGMA Consulting group told Healthcare IT News that EHRs change what is possible for a practice. This can enable a medical office to completely reexamine their processes and change what doesn't make sense. Some providers may have held on to a way of doing things simply because they didn't know there was a better option.
"Most practices have not optimized processes, and many practices have not standardized on forms and procedures," she said, adding that EHR implementation can change the way practices view these issues.
A recent analysis presented at the Annual Symposium of the American Medical Informatics Association suggested that practices that give little consideration to their EHR system's impact on workflow prior to implementation may experience more difficulties after bringing the system live. Carefully considering these factors is key.
