Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates
Profile
Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates is a 17-physician, comprehensive orthopaedic group serving western Colorado and eastern Utah since 1950.
Why SRS?
As soon as their SRS EHR was implemented, Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates realized immediate gains in efficiency and productivity for physicians and staff.
Reinvesting in Ourselves
Benefitting from these gains, we opted to reinvest in ourselves. Instead of decreasing staff levels, we opted for providing better care for our patients. We added 4 new physicians, increasing that total to 17, and added 4 PAs, increasing that total to 10. With virtually the same support staff, all the physicians now have more complete and more useful patient charts. Because of the efficiency gains SRS brings to Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates, the staff now spends more time reviewing patient charts for quality and completeness, which has directly enhanced the level of patient care. Patient satisfaction levels have notably increased, as has the physicians’ confidence in the comprehensiveness and quality of the clinical data.
Communication Is Key
The messaging capabilities of the SRS EHR allow us to communicate more effectively with our patients and other referring physicians. Our response time to patient inquiries has improved considerably. This has a significant impact on patients feeling more secure about the care they receive at our practice. The triage nurses are alerted immediately of required actions to take and have access to all clinical data in the patient’s chart, which is automatically attached to each message sent. All orders that are generated are accurate and handled more efficiently by a specific message pool. The MA enters an order for an injection into a template, which is immediately directed to the surgical scheduler who begins working on it right away. There is no need to wait for hand-written notes, verbal orders, or a chart that has been misplaced. The MRI process is handled similarly—a message is sent to the surgical scheduler who immediately begins the booking process along with the questionnaire. Orders are created, then quickly managed and completed.
Connecting to the Community
The SRS EHR is built on a continuity of care exchange technology foundation, which allows our transcription process to be completely automated and embedded in SRS. Transcriptions are automatically routed to each patient’s chart within 24 hours of his/her appointment. A signed transcription is sent through an HL7 interface to Quality Health Network, our local Health Information Exchange (HIE), which then automatically forwards it to the correct referring physician. Our practice provides care for approximately 300 patients per day—that’s roughly 1,500 patients per week or 75,000 patients per year—for which everything is sent out through this automated system. Furthermore, the connectivity that SRS provides to our HIE allows us to avoid adding resources to the medical records team because it eliminates hours of faxing per day. Our patients are connected to the community—we provide them an enhanced level of comprehensive care no matter which physician or medical facility they visit in our community. Equally rewarding is the positive feedback we constantly receive from referring physicians who are so happy to receive our reports electronically.
The Right Tool for the Job
The key to building a solid physical structure is having the right tools. The same holds true for us as we continually build and evolve Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates into a thriving, state-of-the-art medical practice focused on providing the best patient care possible. SRS is the primary tool at the foundation of our practice—the tool that the physicians and staff count on to be reliable, provide accurate clinical data, and build and secure the integrations necessary for the current and future digital age.
