Survey shows strong interest in mobile technologies
The future of EHRs is likely to involve, at least to some degree, wider use of mobile technologies, according to a new report from ICD Health Insights.
The report states that 42 percent of survey respondents saw mobile technology adoption rates as being very high at their organization. Furthermore, 86 percent expected use of mobile devices to increase during the next year or two.
Results from the report were generated from surveys administered to technology decision makers at healthcare organizations through the U.S. and Europe. Currently, laptops, tablet computers and workstations on wheels are the most commonly used mobile devices.
Some significant hurdles, like security risks, could prevent mobile technology from becoming the primary mode of viewing and editing EHRs.
Solving this issue in the next couple of years will be a major factor in determining the future of mobile devices in medical practices. There is significant hope, as Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently said the technology could play an important role in unleashing the full benefits of EHRs.
